Comprehensive Eye Examinations at Arthur Hayes Opticians

Ensuring Clear Vision and Ocular Health

At Arthur Hayes Opticians, we provide the most thorough and complete eye examination possible using the latest technology. We understand that no two patients are the same and the eye examination is tailored to meet your precise needs.

The eye examination appointment will last approximately 30 minutes, and below is an idea of what to expect.

Firstly, your eyes will be measured using an auto-refractor, a noninvasive procedure that allows us to see the shape of the cornea. This will be followed by a visual field measurement (where appropriate) to provide a definitive reading of your peripheral vision sensitivity.

A thorough history and review of symptoms are established to identify any concerns or issues you may be experiencing and to ensure we address any specific visual requirements. If you are a current spectacle wearer, we will measure the power of your spectacles and record your vision using them.

Your visual system's binocular vision assessment is evaluated, including convergence testing and pupil assessment where necessary. Intraocular pressures will be measured (if over 30 years old or with a family history of glaucoma), followed by a thorough check of the front and back of the eyes. This includes fundus photographs of the retina, where appropriate, along with detailed microscopic views of the front and back of the eye. With our new equipment, Optomap is an ultra-wide scan of the back of your eye, which allows us to view up to 82% of your retina. In addition, with the Topcon Maestro OCT, we can map every layer of the retina in minute detail. Optometrists study this information and use it as a monitoring tool for any changes in the retina in the following years.

After all these health checks have been completed, the refraction is performed to determine your distance and reading vision prescriptions. The eyes are balanced, and the new prescription is verified. At the end of the consultation, we will explain the results to you along with a straightforward course of action. If new spectacles are required, our highly experienced dispensers will be ready to discuss and guide you in choosing a frame and the best spectacle lenses for your prescription.

A private eye examination is for anyone aged 1 to 100+. At Arthur Hayes Opticians, we recommend an annual or two-year eye examination, depending on your visual status.
