Eye care

  • At Arthur Hayes Opticians, we never rush an eye examination. A full appointment typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes. This allows us to carry out all the tests we need — including advanced imaging with our OCT scanner and Optomap retinal camera — and to take the time to discuss findings and any recommendations with you properly. We believe a thorough examination is the foundation of good eye health, and we will always make sure you leave with a clear picture of your vision.

  • Our comprehensive eye examination goes well beyond a standard sight test. As standard, every examination includes an assessment of your prescription for distance and near vision, a check of eye muscle balance and coordination, an assessment of colour vision where relevant, and glaucoma screening. We also include advanced retinal imaging — Optomap ultra-widefield photography and Zeiss OCT 3D scanning — as part of our routine examination. These technologies allow us to detect early signs of conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and retinal tears that would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye.

  • OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is a non-invasive 3D scanning technology that produces a detailed cross-section of the layers of your retina — the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. Think of it as an ultrasound for the eye. It allows us to detect very early signs of conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease, often years before symptoms or changes are visible with a standard examination. At Arthur Hayes Opticians, OCT scanning is included as part of our standard eye examination — we believe every patient deserves this level of care.

  • For most adults, we recommend an eye examination every two years. However, we may recommend more frequent visits depending on your age, your prescription, your family history, or any existing eye health conditions. Children, patients with diabetes, and those being monitored for conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration may need annual appointments. We will always advise you personally at the end of your examination when we would like to see you again.

  • Optomap is an ultra-widefield retinal imaging system that captures a detailed panoramic photograph of approximately 82% of your retina in a single, comfortable image — without the need for drops to dilate your pupils. This means we can examine a far greater area of the retina than with a traditional examination alone, giving us a much more complete picture of your eye health. The image also becomes part of your records, so we can compare it at future visits and spot even subtle changes over time.

  • Yes. Our Dry Eye Clinic offers specialist assessment and treatment for patients suffering from dry, gritty, watery, or uncomfortable eyes. Dry eye is a very common condition with a range of causes — including screen use, contact lens wear, hormonal changes, and certain medications. During a dry eye consultation, we will carry out a detailed assessment of the tear film and meibomian glands, and recommend a personalised treatment plan. In some cases, we may suggest Punctal Plugs — small, comfortable inserts placed in the tear drainage channels to help retain natural moisture on the eye surface.

  • Blepharitis is a chronic condition causing inflammation of the eyelid margins, often leading to sore, red, or crusty eyelids — particularly in the mornings. It is very common and can affect people of all ages. While blepharitis is not usually serious, it can be persistent and uncomfortable if left untreated. We offer dedicated blepharitis treatment at Arthur Hayes Opticians, which may include lid hygiene advice, heat therapy, and a tailored management plan to keep symptoms well controlled.

  • Yes — myopia management is an area we take seriously. Myopia (short-sightedness) in children is becoming increasingly common, and research shows that managing its progression early can significantly reduce the risk of serious eye conditions in later life, such as retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy. We offer specialist myopia management consultations and can discuss options including MiSight contact lenses, orthokeratology, and atropine therapy, depending on your child's age and prescription. We recommend bringing children in for their first eye examination by the age of three, and then every year through school age.

Hearing Care

  • No — you do not need a referral from your GP to book a hearing assessment with us. You can contact us directly to arrange an appointment. Our hearing care service is provided by qualified audiologists, and we will carry out a full assessment and discuss the results with you at your appointment. If we identify anything that requires further medical attention, we will advise you on next steps and liaise with your GP where appropriate.

  • A hearing assessment at Arthur Hayes typically lasts around 45 to 60 minutes. It begins with a discussion of your hearing history and any concerns you have. We then carry out a full audiometric test in a sound-treated environment, measuring your hearing across a range of frequencies to create a detailed picture of your hearing ability. We will explain your results clearly, and if hearing aids or further investigation are recommended, we will walk you through your options without any pressure.

  • Yes. We offer professional ear wax removal as part of our hearing care clinic. This service is delivered in partnership with THCP Hearing, using safe, clinically approved microsuction and irrigation techniques. If you are experiencing blocked ears, reduced hearing, or that muffled "underwater" feeling, ear wax build-up may well be the cause. Please call us to book a dedicated appointment — we do not recommend attempting to remove ear wax at home with cotton buds or ear candles.

  • Newborns are screened for hearing loss through the NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme. Beyond that, it is worth being alert to any signs of hearing difficulty as your child grows — particularly if they seem to miss instructions, turn the television up loudly, or have delayed speech development. If you have any concerns about your child's hearing at any age, please do not hesitate to get in touch — early identification makes a significant difference to outcomes.

Spectacles & Contact Lenses

  • For most single vision and standard varifocal prescriptions, we aim to have your glasses ready within 7 to 10 working days. Complex prescriptions, specialist lens coatings, or bespoke frame orders may take a little longer, and we will always give you an estimated timeframe when you place your order. We will contact you as soon as your glasses are ready for collection, at which point we will carry out a fitting adjustment to make sure they sit perfectly.

  • Yes. We supply a full range of contact lenses, including daily disposables, monthly lenses, toric lenses for astigmatism, and multifocal lenses. For existing patients with a current contact lens prescription, we offer a convenient home delivery service — your lenses and solutions are sent straight to your door. To order, please contact us with your lens details, and we will arrange this for you. If you have not worn contact lenses before, or if your prescription has changed, we will need to carry out a contact lens fitting and assessment first.

  • We hand-pick a curated collection of frames from some of the most respected independent and designer eyewear brands available — including Cutler & Gross, Lafont, Etnia Barcelona, Pro Design, Dutz, RAEN, Heyelander, Booth & Bruce, Le Parc, Erkers, and Paname. We also stock Tomato Glasses for children, Izipizi ready-to-wear readers, Coti Vision glasses chains, and a dedicated collection of Maui Jim polarised sunglasses. Our selection is deliberately chosen to offer something different from the high street — if you're looking for a frame that genuinely suits your face and personality, we'd love to help you find it.

  • Yes — if your glasses feel uncomfortable, have become misaligned, or need a minor repair, please pop in and we will do our best to help. Frame adjustments are usually carried out while you wait at no charge for glasses purchased from us. For glasses bought elsewhere, we are happy to help where we can, though there may be a small charge depending on the work involved. We always recommend having your glasses checked and adjusted periodically, as even small changes in fit can affect comfort and vision.

  • Yes — we offer a comprehensive range of varifocal (progressive) lenses to suit different lifestyles and budgets. Varifocals correct distance, intermediate, and near vision in a single lens, avoiding the need to switch between multiple pairs of glasses. The quality of varifocal lenses varies considerably, and our dispensing opticians will take the time to explain your options and recommend the lens design most suited to your prescription, frame choice, and daily activities. We use precision digital lens technology to ensure the best possible optical result.

Appointments

  • You can book an appointment by calling us on 01342 312377 or emailing us at admineg@hayesoptician.co.uk. We are open Tuesday to Friday, 9 am–5 pm and Saturday, 9 am–4 pm. When you get in touch, just let us know what type of appointment you need, and we will find a time that suits you. We try to accommodate appointments as soon as possible.

  • If you currently wear glasses or contact lenses, please bring them with you. If you have any previous prescriptions, it can be helpful to bring these too, though it is not essential — we will take a full history at the start of your appointment. If you are entitled to an NHS-funded examination, bring your HC2 certificate or benefit documentation if applicable. For contact lens appointments, please bring your current lenses if possible. There is no need to do anything special to prepare for an eye examination — just arrive as you normally would.

  • Absolutely — we welcome patients of all ages, including young children. We recommend that children have their first eye examination around the age of three, and then every year through their school years. Early testing is important because many children are unaware that their vision is not as it should be, and uncorrected vision problems can affect learning and development. We have a relaxed, friendly approach to examining children and are experienced in making the process comfortable and enjoyable for young patients.

  • We are located at 10 Middle Row in the heart of East Grinstead town centre. There are several public car parks within a short walk, including Cantelupe Road car park and King Street car park. East Grinstead railway station is approximately a 10-minute walk, with regular services to London Bridge, Gatwick Airport, and the surrounding area. If you have any difficulty with access or mobility, please let us know when you book and we will do everything we can to help.
